essencial audio tools

'Essential Audio Tools' is a brandname from the SQR stable. The name speaks for itself, tools which are very essential for music reproduction. And better reproduction often means more involvement.

With our 'essential tools' we are active in many ways, but now we specially focus on the mains supply of your equipment, after all it starts with the power. A power supply which is not good will harm the details in your music. Stray-fields and pikes coming from external (non-audio) apparatus can be noticeable, but in most cases we only knew they were there after we hear our set without the problem.
Having no earth, or having a low quality earth, can be very harmfull. Good earth can prevent from pollution, but sometimes however the pollution enters throught the earth.

The use of good quality mainscables with well designed screening, mains extension boxes with star-wiring, checking out the phase of your mains and apparatus and also a good filtering sometimes can change more then buying a new cd player or amplifier.

current conductor

Well balanced cable design with double screening and good connections.
Very neutral mains cable, is able to open up many details.

- Lowers the external field around your mainscord
- Lowers sensitivity for excisting fields in the surrounding
- Can easily transport high currents without powerloss

Working principle

Without noticing we are in a very polluted environment. Everywhere around us fields arise from currents flowing through conductors. Also interference pulses are not visible to us, but they just are there. Each device using energy causes fluctuations on the network in the form of peaks or surges, or causes a variation in the fields in the air. The effects occur around the device itself and on its mains supply, but even far away from the device the fields are still measurable. This can only be measured with suitable equipment, not with our ears.

Common thought is that shielded supply cables protect the connected devices better against influences from outside, and that is true. But much more important is that the field created by the fluctuating current inside the supply cable does not reach interlinks in the neighbourhood. Interlinks transports small signals to devices with a high input resistance, this makes the signals extremely sensitive for interfering fields.

Many supply cables for audio look beautiful , just like ours. But appearance is not all ! The Current Conductor is a dual shielded cable. The outside shield is NOT a braided steel one, a steel screening does not function as a shield, it is meant to protect the cable against physical force. Instead, the Current Conductor has a braided copper screen with high density and tin protection against oxidation. Under the copper shielding lies a 100% closed aluminum foil for suppression of high frequenties. In contradiction to a synthetic foil, this solution works!

The three stranded wires are suitable to conduct high currents without resistive losses (the losses of energy in the form of heat). The earth wire is connected at both sides, the shield is only connected at the feeding side, as it is supposed to be. Finally, we gave the plug a nice CNC machined cover.

Where to use?

If it is up to us, everywhere! But the upmost effect can be obtained as the supply cables from large consuming devices become replaced. The external fields will thus lower to acceptable values.

Power supply cables close to interlinks should also be replaced, especially when the signal transport is unbalanced (witch RCA or phono plugs). When Power supply cables are wired in parallel of signal cables, or when the signal cable is coming from or going to a phonostage, then placing the Current Conductor is strongly recommended.

The low resistance of our Current Conductor can also work in your advantage when passing a large distance. The total resistance is lineary proportional to the cable length.

When in doubt: just contact us. We will be pleased to answer your questions.

What to expect?

The result of experimenting with supply cables can vary from small changes to big surprises. The most heard improvement is the quietness in silent parts of the music as well as more noticeable details

current spyder

A mains cord with at one end a single mains plug (75cm or 150cm) and at the other end three IEC connectors. These three cables have a length of 20/30/40 or 40/40/40 cm, so the Current Spyder will hang down without taking a lot of space behind your set.
The result: Reduced cable mess and a much better performance.
The Current Spyder (on purpose with y, just because we like it) is equipped with a Pulse Protection to protect your valuable system.

The Current Spyder not only makes audiosets perform better, it also reduces the visible mess. The relationship with your life-partner will become much better. Probably you can give hints to have this for your birthday!

The Current Spyder is designed to feed audio equipment standing on top of eachother. Thus the Spyder will hang down and disappear behind the set while lowering the external fields.

mains multipliers with filter

The Mains Multiplier is not a regular multiple socket, more a work of art made on a CNC machine that shapes this form out of one piece synthetic material. Yes… synthetic! The results speak for them selve, optical as well as electrical.

The type of the five outputs is chosen because of the high contactpressure, which is obvious when putting in or pulling out an electric plug. More contactpressure and an optimal contact surface do create a low resistancevalue, this is very important for a good voltage distribution.

The wiring from phase, neutral and earth are connected by a star principle. Every output has its own wiring towards the feed cable. Peaks in the current or interference signals that appear on the earth contacts of one socket will now have less effect on the other sockets.

Just behind the IEC input connector a Pulse protector is integrated. This prevents peaks and pulses to reach your equipment. For more information, read about the Pulse Protector elsewhere on this site.

Where to use?

Wherever you need to connect multiple loads to the mains, the Mains Multiplier is a wise choice. Of course you will have to use high performance supply cables, else the Mains Multiplier will not perform at its best. It's a combination of factors, only if you use the Mains Multiplier in combination with high performance supply cables you will have the maximum results for your audiosystem.

Of course it is possible to use the Mains Multiplier as a ordinary multiple socket without high performance supply cables, but this will not give you optimal results. Our advice is to keep on saving, the result will be rewarding.

What to expect?

An improvement in dynamics, a much better sound image and a lower hum level. The soundcharacter of your audio system remains, fortunately!

By using the Mains Multiplier with integrated Pulse Protector your equipment has less trouble with electrical failures induced by distortion on your network, and it is better protected against damage through lightning impacts nearby. A guarantee that lightning impacts will not damage your devices can not be given because the energy-content is too high.

The Mains Multiplier is supplied with an ordinary mains cord, just to prevent you from coming home without having one. We suggest you get a good cord, for example our Current Conductor, to have better results.

filters

NOISE EATER

This device is a parallel filter against mains distortion.
Most important is that the current for your appliance is not running through this filter, but in fact the filter is looking at the current and removes the distortion.

- Many disturbances in audio performance will disappear
- More rest in quite music parts
- Your soundstage will be more transparant then ever

Working principle

Interference pulses mostly arise on the network when switching a devices on or off, but they can also be induced by industry in the neighborhood or elevator-installations in the building. Also refrigerators, washing machines, dryers, drilling machines and all other appliences that are connected to the network can cause interference pulses.

The presence of interfering pulses can be proven, but only with assistance of measuring equipment. Low distortion on the network is hard to detect, but the effect is very audible. An unstable sound image, hum or noise.... the disturbances can appear in various forms.

The Noise Eater is a parallel filter. This means that the main current that feeds your audio will not flow through the components of the filter. In fact the filter is only monitoring the mains and then traps the distortion signals. Currents will not slow down, but the distortion will be gone!

The circuit used has been extensively tested, the sound character of the music remains intact! The circuit itself has been poured in resin to prevent it from vibrations. Even the shell of the Noise Eater is solid build, from a single piece of material, brought into shape by a CNC turning machine. So, the Noise Eater IS not just a great filter….. it also has the LOOKS of a great filter.

Where to use?

In contradiction to the placement of the Pulse Protector the Noise Eater always have to be placed close to the equipment, preferable in the multiple socket in which also the plugs of the audio systems are connected.

The Noise Eater can be used for devices as CD players, tuners, record players, but also amplifiers will benefit, even large ones! Several Noise eaters in one multiple socket in most cases is useless, one Noise eater in each multiple socket is a good idea, but feel free to experiment…

The Noise Eater is not critical to phase, you can just "plug" the Noise Eater in the socket or multiple socket box, the difference is audible immediately.

What to expect?

The Noise Eater removes disturbances and noise from the network. Because the main current "passes-by" the filter it will not produce heat.

The sound character of your system will certainly not change, but the calmness in the sound and the stability of the image will be very noticeable, specially during working hours when there are more disturbance on the network.

The Noise eater is a small investment with maximum performance!

PULSE PROTECTOR

Saves your valuable equipment from being damaged and eleminates spikes.
Absolutely no negative influence on the sound.

- Eliminates pulses and spikes on your mains
- Protects your equipment
- Gives you a more transparent sound stage

Working principle

Interference pulses mostly arise on the network when switching a device on or off, but the disturbances can also be induced by industry in the neighborhood or elevator-installations in the building. Also refrigerators, washing machines, dryers, drilling machines and many other to the network connected appliances can cause interferences.

The presence of interferences can be proven, but only with assistance of measurement equipment. But when you are having trouble with a cd- or dvd-player, that gets stuck in the menu, a tuner that for no reason jumps to another station, or a garage door that spontaneously opens, then its possible that a Pulse-Protector will solve your problems.

The Pulse Protector is a robust assembled plug with components that convert each pulse above 240 Volt into thermal energy. The Pulse Protector is not a filter. All signals under the 240 Volt barrier pass, high as well as low frequences. The Pulse Protector will not even take notice of low voltage signals. Therefore.....there will be no difference in sound character or sound image!

Where to use?

There are two possible situations. You know where the pulses come from, or you have no clue where they originate from.

When you know which device produces the interferences, you can solve the problem at the source. Place the Pulse Protector as close as possible to the device that is producing these pulses, most likely this will solve the problem. With as close possible we really mean as close as possible, every meter away from the source will make the Pulse Protector less effective.

When you don't know were the pulses come from you can only prevent them to reach your system. Place the Pulse-Protector as close as possible to the device you want to protect. Here the same rule counts: put the Pulse protector in the same outlet where also your device is in.

Placing several Pulse-protectors in the same area will not have a negative effect. They can not damage your system and don't consume energy. Everywhere a Pulse-Protector is placed pulses make no chance!

What to expect?

Because pulses now are supressed your equipment will have less problems, like getting stuck or spontaneously attempting the wrong actions. Your network is better protected against damage by lightning impacts nearby. A guarantee that lightning impacts will not damage your device can not be given, for that the energy-content is too large.

An improvement in the dynamics, increased quality of the sound image and suppression of the hum level. The soundcharacter of the audiosystem remains, fortunately!

SOUND SAVER

Easy tool to check which pole of your mains contact is the phase.
Can also detect no earth connection or balanced mains condition.

- Tells you which of the two contacts of your mains connection is the phase
- Checks your earth connection
- Detects if your mains is normal type or balanced type

Workingprinciple

For a good audio performance it is very important that the equipment is connected to the mains the right way. But which way is right? Manufacturers often indicate phase on their equipment or plug, the only thing to find out yet is where the phase is on the mains socket.

Also important for your equipment is a correct earth connection. Not having earth is an unsafe condition. A bad earth condition or no earth at all can cause problems in sound reproduction. Hum is a very audible result, but sometimes we just realise what details we miss until we hear this piece of music somewhere else.

The Sound Saver has a clever circuit which measures both mains contacts and earth. With two LEDs (light emitting diodes) it indicates which mains contact is phase. Only one LED will light. The other mains contact is neutral; it is at about the same level as earth. Watch out, it should be in theory! In practise, due to some effects in leads or equipment, the neutral and earth can differ up to some volts. The result of this difference in voltage can be very serious for your sound.

If the Sound Saver gives no indication at all, then the mains earth contact is not connected. Watch out! No LEDs does NOT mean no voltage! Don't touch the bare contacts of the mains, this can be very dangerous. When both LEDs light up, you have a balanced mains condition. Here the difference between phase and neutral can not be determined, in fact the contacts are both phase. This condition is problematic, but can give -under strict terms- some advantages for equipment with problematic power supplies.

The Sound Saver is your easy tool to answer questions about connecting your equipment to the mains the right way.

Where to use?

The Sound Saver should be used to measure the mains contacts you use for your equipment. Measure every contact, also when more contacts are in the same multiple socket. We have seen strange situations till now, you can better be sure.Mark the phase with a dot or a sticker on each contact. Also mark the plug of your multiple socket, now you know how it was inserted in the wall during your measurements.

Determining your equipment phase is more difficult. We already have a clever design ready which will be introduced later. Till then you have to rely on the information of your equipment manufacturer.

Don't leave the Sound Saver in your socket all the time. It is a measurement tool which is not made to work constantly.

What can you expect?

Don't expect another miracle. There will be a difference, but we can not say how big the difference will be. It depends on your mains, your cables and your equipment.
The differences will be noticeable in spatial performance and details on a low sound level.

A good solution stands or falls with good quality mains cables and a good distribution box. The Sound saver is just a first step in the right direction.
